Profishient Charters is West Michigan’s largest fishing charter service, running river guide charters on West Michigan’s rivers for Steelhead and Salmon. In addition, we operate three boats from Michigan City Indiana up to Holland Michigan on Lake Michigan during the Spring and Summer targeting offshore steelhead and salmon. We guide our clients on major river systems in Southwest Michigan, including the St Joseph, Kalamazoo, Grand and Muskegon Rivers….depending on the best action.
Our fall/winter season begins in September targeting King and Coho salmon as the fish begin to migrate up their major river systems of origin. As the salmon migrate upstream, we target these fish using a variety of methods including spin casting large artificials, trolling with plugs, and dropping or center pin bobbing with spawn. We also cater to fly fisherman who are looking to battle these aggressive fish with light tackle.
As the waters begin to cool both offshore and in the rivers during October, the major push of salmon begins to wind down and steelhead begin to move into the rivers beginning their annual migration into the river systems where they will spend their winters. As the steelhead move into the rivers, they are still very silver in color, and extremely aggressive. Excellent tactics include back dropping spawn, center-pin bobber fishing, spin casting and fly fishing. November and December are peak months of activity as the steelhead begin to acclimate themselves to the river.
January and February separates the men from the boys on the river as the fish slow their metabolism’s in the cold water, making the fishing more of a finesse game. Typically the currents are slower, and the fish hang back in holes and must be coaxed into attacking. Fortunately, we have mastered our winter technique’s to ensure consistent action during this time.
March begins the spawning ritual of the steelhead within the rivers before the fish either move back out into the open waters of Lake Michigan, or die at the end of their life cycles. Strong current and aggressive spawning attitudes keep the fishing hot in March.
So call us today to come join us in what has become one of the world’s most productive salmon and steelhead river sportfishing grounds….the rivers of West Michigan!
